[Notice] Can you no longer buy 리도멕스크림 at the pharmacy? (리도멕스크림 reclassified as prescription-only)

Today's post

starts with one short news article.

리도멕스크림 is called the 'people's steroid,' to the point where

It is a product commonly used in households with children.

​

리도멕스, developed by Japan's Kowa,

has been distributed domestically for over 30 years,

to the extent that it became the first cream used after 비판텐,

and has been perceived as a "mild" steroid,

​

​

However, as of 2021/3/2,

the approval status of 리도멕스 cream

has been changed to a prescription-only medicine.

​

Over-the-counter medicine?

Prescription-only medicine?

​

Simply put,

Go to the hospital and

with a doctor's prescription

Meaning that you can receive it at the pharmacy!

Such a "mild" steroid

Why?

Did it become a prescription medicine?

​

In the case of steroidal topical preparations,

They are classified in stages according to the potency of the steroid.

designated from 1 to 7 stages, and

Up to 5 stages are classified as prescription drugs, and at least 6 stages are classified as over-the-counter drugs.

However, this stage classification

may vary depending on the theory.

​

Until now, 리도멕스 had been placed at 7 stage

and classified as such,

with its authorization maintained as an over-the-counter drug,

but the Korean Pediatric Society

judged it to be at a prescription drug grade of 5 stage level,

and the original drug, the Japanese product,

is sold as a prescription drug grade in Japan itself

​

For the above reasons,

삼아제약, the distributor,

requested that 리도멕스크림 be reclassified as a prescription drug

and applied for an approval change,

and ultimately, on 3/2 of this year,

it came to be changed to a prescription drug.

​

Not only 리도멕스,

all preparations containing prednisolone valerate acetate 0.3%

have been converted to prescription drugs across all products.
