Minoxidil for Crown and Receding-Hairline Hair Loss: 유한미녹펜겔 vs Liquid Products

When shopping for hair-loss products, the sheer number of options can be so overwhelming that you end up not choosing anything at all.

Among them, 유한미녹펜겔 and standard minoxidil products have similar names and seemingly overlapping ingredients, leaving many people confused about what actually sets them apart.

At the pharmacy, I quite often see customers holding both products side by side and asking, "Which one is better?" Today I'll give you a proper comparison based on the approved product information and the actual ingredient list printed on the box.

1. Minoxidil: Back to Basics

Minoxidil was originally developed as a blood-pressure medication; after its hair-growth effect was confirmed, it was repurposed as a hair-loss treatment.

It is currently the key active ingredient in topical hair-loss preparations sold as over-the-counter medicines in South Korea.

There are three main formulation types.

✔ Liquid type (solution) — the oldest formulation, solid clinical data, lower price

✔ Foam type — reported to absorb quickly and cause less irritation

✔ Gel type — advantage for targeted, localized application

The liquid type has solid clinical data and a lower price, making it the most widely used, but some users report irritation from scalp greasiness or the propylene glycol it contains. Against this backdrop, the gel type began to attract attention.

However, being a gel does not automatically mean it causes less irritation — so let's look more closely.

2. 유한미녹펜겔: Features of the Gel Formulation

유한미녹펜겔 is a topical gel-formulation product containing minoxidil 5%.

It uses a roll-on pen structure: you pump the button to dispense the gel, then gently roll it onto the area affected by hair loss.

Per its South Korean approval, the indicated use is limited to androgenetic alopecia (male-pattern hair loss) only.

The advantage of the gel formulation is that it does not drip and makes it easy to apply intensively to a specific area. It is well suited for pinpoint application to localized areas such as the crown, M-shaped hairline, and hairline edge, and with approximately 107 pumps' worth of product (15g) it is also highly portable — which seems to be why more and more people are seeking it out these days.

3. Misinformation That Has Spread Widely — Please Check the Facts

A claim circulating widely online that "유한미녹펜겔 contains no propylene glycol" is not accurate.

Propylene glycol is clearly listed on both the ingredient table on the side of the box and in the South Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety–approved package insert.

Actual excipient list (verified directly from the box)

→ Propylene glycol, D-panthenol, hydroxyethyl cellulose, carbomer, butylhydroxytoluene, phosphoric acid, trolamine, L-menthol, ethanol (95), purified water

If you are concerned about any of these ingredients, you should check the actual excipient list directly before making your choice.

4. Key Comparison with Standard Minoxidil Products

How does it compare with standard minoxidil liquid products?

유한미녹펜겔 vs. Standard Minoxidil Solution

The key question is not "which product is absolutely better" but rather "which one suits my scalp condition and hair-loss type."

If you are unsure which to choose, it may be a good idea to come to the pharmacy and consult with the pharmacist before deciding.

5. How to Use It and Important Precautions You Must Know

Here is the basic usage.

After fully drying your hair and scalp, apply 0.5–1g only to the affected area. Apply 2 times per 1 day (morning and evening); the total daily dose must not exceed 2g per 1 day.

⚠️ Initial Shedding Phenomenon

Within the first few weeks of use, you may feel as though your hair is temporarily falling out more than usual. This is a normal process in which resting-phase hairs shed as new hairs grow in. This is the period when most people stop using the product — please do not discontinue.

⚠️ Must-Read for Female Users

유한미녹펜겔 is not approved for use in women under its registered indications in South Korea. If you are experiencing female-pattern hair loss, please choose a 3% minoxidil product (one separately approved for women in South Korea). If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you must consult a healthcare professional before making any decision.

To properly evaluate the effect, you need to use it for at least 4 months — and realistically 6 months or more to notice a meaningful difference.

6. What Did Actual Users Feel?

User Reviews

Looking at reviews on online communities and pharmacy platforms, responses tend to fall into two broad categories.

✅ What Users Liked

The most common responses were "it doesn't get on my hands" and "it's so convenient to just dab it right on the crown in the morning." The roll-on design is frequently mentioned as allowing precise application only to the desired area, and the slim pen shape means you can keep up with your routine even while on business trips or traveling.

❌ What Users Didn't Like

"The spot where I applied it stays sticky."

"My hair looks clumped together" — these reactions also come up.

People with thicker hair sometimes find it more troublesome than the solution to get the gel all the way down to the scalp. Scalp itching and dryness appear at a similar rate to the solution, prompting some to say, "I thought the gel would be less irritating, but…"

💊 From a Pharmacist's Perspective

The most common thing I hear at the pharmacy is, "I used it for a few months and it seemed like my hair was falling out even more, so I stopped." This is the initial shedding phenomenon described earlier — not knowing about it beforehand is the most common pattern that leads people to quit at exactly that stage.

However, continuing without stopping and using it consistently for 4 to 6 months is what is recommended.

Consulting with a pharmacist — even briefly — before you start can make a big difference in whether you stick with it long term.

6. Summary

Minoxidil-based products are over-the-counter medicines available without a prescription in South Korea, but they cannot be sold or purchased online — they can only be purchased in person at a pharmacy.

Please do not just pick any product at random.

Your scalp condition, type of hair loss, and current medication history should all be taken into account when making a choice; if there is anything you are unsure or confused about, consulting at a pharmacy is the quickest way to get answers.
