Korean Children’s Digestive Medicines: Ingredients and Doses Compared

Hello, I'm the Dad Pharmacist at Suwon Star Pharmacy (참약사).

Lately, a lot of people have been coming into the pharmacy asking, "What's a good syrup to give my child when they have an upset stomach?" — and from my experience, that question really is coming up more and more.

There are quite a few liquid digestive medicines you can squeeze out and give to a child when they're having trouble digesting or feel bloated after eating.

Since Kyungbang Pharmaceutical recently launched 맑은초키즈시럽, I'd like to compare it with the existing products 백초시럽플러스, 꼬마활명수액, and 베나치오키즈액. Let me compare 백초시럽플러스, 꼬마활명수액, and 베나치오키즈액 side by side in terms of ingredients and dosage.

What we'll cover today

  1. Starting with why all four products have the same indications

  2. Side-by-side comparison table of ingredients and dosages

  3. Differences in flavor, preservatives, and packaging

  4. Which one is right for your child?

  5. Questions I often hear at the pharmacy

Same indications, different ingredients

Let me be clear from the start: all four products are over-the-counter medicines, and their approved indications and effects are exactly identical.

They are all herbal digestive syrups used for loss of appetite, abdominal bloating, indigestion, overeating, upset stomach, nausea, vomiting, intestinal regulation, constipation, and loose stools.

In other words, the key is not to pick based on "which one is stronger," but to choose based on the herbal ingredient composition and the dosage appropriate for your child's age.

Ingredients & Dosage at a Glance

The table below shows the main herbal ingredient content per 1mL of each product. Since the volume per 1 sachet (5mL·10mL) and the dosing instructions vary by product and by age, please do not judge one product as better or worse based on the raw ingredient numbers alone.

맑은초키즈시럽 is characterized by a broad range of digestive and intestinal herbal ingredients, including hawthorn berry (산사), coptis rhizome (황련), phellodendron bark (황백), costus root (목향), and magnolia bark (후박). Hawthorn berry in particular has long been used as a digestive herb.

백초시럽플러스 contains licorice root (감초), coptis rhizome (황련), and phellodendron bark (황백), along with scutellaria root (황금), ginseng (인삼), and gentian root (용담). Unlike the other three products, it has a higher licorice content, so anyone with a history of hypertension or kidney disease should consult a pharmacist or doctor before use.

꼬마활명수액 and 베나치오키즈액 both contain corydalis tuber (현호색), a herb familiar from the 활명수 product line. Both of these products also have a relatively higher proportion of smoked plum (오매) and tangerine peel (진피).

Here's how they differ in flavor, preservatives, and packaging

In my experience, whether a child will actually take the medicine really comes down to the flavor. All four products are free of artificial colorings.

● 맑은초키즈시럽 — Strawberry & banana flavor. Preservative: sodium benzoate. 5mL per 1 sachet; comes in a box of 10 sachets.

● 베나치오키즈액 — Strawberry & peach flavor. Preservative: potassium sorbate. 10mL per sachet; comes in a box of 6 sachets.

● 꼬마활명수액 — Strawberry & orange-lime flavor. Preservative: sodium benzoate. 10mL per sachet; comes in a box of 5 sachets.

● 백초시럽플러스 — Peppermint flavor, which gives it a slightly cool, refreshing sensation. Preservative: 2 types of parabens. Separately packaged as 5mL sachets for children and 10mL sachets for adults.

Which one is right for your child?

When you look at the ingredients one by one, you can see that the four products each take a slightly different approach to their herbal formulation. Thinking about what kind of situation tends to make your child uncomfortable when they're having digestive trouble can help guide you toward the right product.

● 백초시럽플러스 — For digestive discomfort accompanied by a feeling of heat

백초시럽플러스 features herbs traditionally regarded as having a cooling nature, such as coptis rhizome (황련), phellodendron bark (황백), gentian root (용담), and scutellaria root (황금). Of course, it also contains herbs traditionally seen as warming, such as cinnamon bark (육계) and ginseng (인삼), but compared across the four products, the characteristics of the cooling herbs are relatively more prominent.

So if your child is feeling bloated and uncomfortable along with a sense of heat, this kind of formulation may be worth keeping in mind.

● 맑은초키즈시럽 — For various types of digestive discomfort with no clear cause

맑은초, by contrast, is characterized by a balanced composition that does not lean to one side. It contains warm-natured herbal ingredients such as atractylodes (창출), costus root (목향), tangerine peel (진피), dried ginger (건강), hawthorn (산사), and magnolia bark (후박), as well as cool-natured herbal ingredients such as coptis rhizome (황련), phellodendron bark (황백), and catechu (아선약), along with licorice (감초) and smoked plum (오매).

So when it's hard to say for sure whether the problem is from eating something cold or from overeating, and your child says they feel bloated and can't digest well, 맑은초 is one option to look into if you're looking for a product that combines a wide range of herbal ingredients.

● 베나치오키즈액 — For digestive discomfort after eating cold food

베나치오키즈 is centered on herbal ingredients classified as warm in nature, such as cinnamon bark (육계), fennel (회향), dried ginger (건강), and tangerine peel (진피). One notable feature is that both dried ginger and fennel are included together.

If your child feels stomach discomfort or says digestion isn't going well after eating cold foods like ice cream or cold drinks, this type of warming-centered formulation may be worth considering.

● 꼬마활명수액 — For a cold, stagnant feeling in the stomach as if food is stuck

꼬마활명수 also contains many warm-natured herbal ingredients. In addition to cinnamon bark (육계) and dried ginger (건강), it combines several other herbs including cloves (정향), nutmeg (육두구), tangerine peel (진피), and magnolia bark (후박).

So if your child usually feels like their stomach runs cold and frequently feels bloated and sluggish as if food is stuck after eating, this type of formulation may be worth looking into.

Frequently asked questions at the pharmacy

Can it be given on an empty stomach? All four products are intended to be taken after meals, 3 times per 1 day. It is best to allow at least 4 hours between doses after meals.

Can two packets be given at once? It is safest to follow the prescribed dose for 1 serving. Doses are set by age, so please do not increase them on your own. If you're unsure, let us know your child's age and we can help you find the right amount.

What if there's no improvement no matter how long it's given? If symptoms do not improve after about 2 weeks of use for 맑은초 and 꼬마활명수, or about one month for 베나치오키즈, stop use and consult a doctor or pharmacist. If your child develops a fever, blood in the stool, or severe abdominal pain, see a doctor before reaching for a digestive remedy.

Can it be given together with other medicines? There may be overlapping ingredients, so if your child is currently taking any other medicine, please have both checked by a pharmacist at the same time.

Even if the effects are similar, the herbal ingredients differ, so it's a good idea to choose based on your child's symptoms and age. If you're unsure about measuring the dose, feel free to consult at the pharmacy anytime.
