Korean Athlete’s Foot Sprays Compared: 무조무 알파 스프레이 vs 나프젠액

Hello! I'm the Dad Pharmacist at Suwon Star Pharmacy (참약사), located in Jangan-gu, Suwon.

"Is there a spray so I don't have to touch the fungus with my hands?" We hear this question in summer. When the skin between your fingers or toes is raw and weeping, or the infection has spread to several spots and you'd rather not apply cream by hand, people often look for a spray-on athlete's foot treatment.

무조무알파에어로솔 has terbinafine hydrochloride as its main ingredient, while 나프젠액1% (naftifine hydrochloride) contains naftifine hydrochloride. Knowing that the two products differ quite a bit in their approved indications and formulation can help you choose between them.

What kind of athlete's foot treatments are these two products?

Both are spray-on treatments for athlete's foot and are available as over-the-counter medicines. However, their characteristics are quite different.

무조무알파에어로솔 is an over-the-counter aerosol. Its main ingredient, terbinafine hydrochloride, targets the fungus, and it also contains ingredients to soothe itching and stinging (lidocaine, diphenhydramine, and enoxolone).

It is approved (in South Korea) for athlete's foot (tinea pedis), tinea cruris (jock itch), and tinea (ringworm). Because it is an aerosol, it can spray even when held upside down.

You can easily spray it between your toes or at angles that are hard to reach. It comes in two sizes: 60g and 120g.

나프젠액1% is a product distributed by Hyundai Pharm and is a liquid preparation focused on a single ingredient, naftifine hydrochloride. It is not an aerosol but a pump-spray liquid, and it comes as a single bottle of 30mL.

Its approved indications (in South Korea) are relatively broad: in addition to tinea and tinea cruris, it covers cutaneous candidiasis, pityriasis versicolor (tinea versicolor), and onychomycosis (nail fungal infection of the hands and feet).

Side-by-side comparison table

The two products differ clearly in their approved indications. 무조무알파 covers athlete's foot, tinea cruris, and tinea, but it has no approved indication for nail fungal infection (onychomycosis). 나프젠액, on the other hand, is approved (in South Korea) for pityriasis versicolor and nail fungal infection as well, so it offers more options when your symptoms are not limited to a simple case of athlete's foot.

Another difference is the ingredient composition. 무조무알파 is a combination product containing the antifungal ingredient together with ingredients that relieve itching and stinging, whereas 나프젠액 contains only a single antifungal ingredient.

There is also the formulation difference: aerosol versus pump-spray liquid.

So which one should you choose?

The two products overlap in the broad goal of treating athlete's foot (tinea / tinea cruris). Please read the distinctions below as differences in approved indications, ingredients, and formulation — not as a judgment of which is more effective.

● When you are also concerned about nail fungal infection or pityriasis versicolor 나프젠액 has approved indications (in South Korea) for onychomycosis (nail fungal infection) and pityriasis versicolor as well, so it can be an option if those conditions are also a concern.

● For between the toes or hard-to-reach angles 무조무알파 is an aerosol that sprays even when held upside down, making it easy to apply without touching the affected area. It also contains ingredients that address itching and stinging at the same time.

Tips for using spray-on athlete's foot treatments

As a general rule for both products, wash the affected area thoroughly and dry it completely before applying 1 time per 1 day. Applying to wet skin may reduce absorption and effectiveness.

Here is a tip I often share based on my experience. The fungus can remain on shoes and socks and become a source of reinfection. Lightly spraying the inside of your shoes or socks to eliminate the fungus may help reduce recurrence.

Because 무조무알파 is an aerosol, there are a few precautions. Spray from a distance of 5 cm from the affected area, and avoid spraying the same spot continuously for 1 second or more (risk of frostbite). Do not use it on the eyes, mucous membranes, scrotum, fingernails/toenails, or scalp.

For 나프젠액, avoid contact with the mucous membranes of the eyes, nose, and mouth, and do not apply to areas with acute inflammation or open wounds.

Frequently asked questions at the pharmacy

Q. I've been using it for more than 2 weeks and it's not getting better. In that case, it may be a skin condition other than athlete's foot. If either product does not improve after a certain period of use, stop self-treating and see a doctor first.

Q. Can it be used during pregnancy or on children? 무조무알파 is labeled for use not to be used by pregnant women, nursing mothers, or young children. 나프젠액 has not established safety in children either, and pregnant women are advised to use it only when the benefit is considered to outweigh the risk.

In both cases, it is safer to consult a pharmacist or doctor first.

Q. Can I use 무조무알파 for nail fungal infection? No. 무조무알파 has no approved indication for nail fungal infection (onychomycosis), and fingernails/toenails are listed as a site where its use is prohibited. If you have nail fungal infection, please confirm with a pharmacist which product — such as 나프젠액 — has the relevant approved indication.

Q. Can I use it together with another athlete's foot medicine? It may depend on the ingredients in each product. Please check with your pharmacist about any medicines you are using together.

Even when athlete's foot seems to have cleared up, the fungus can remain at the root and easily come back. Even after symptoms disappear, you need to keep using the treatment for the prescribed duration, and proper care of your shoes and socks is essential to truly finishing it off.
