First of all, all three products are over-the-counter (OTC) medicines. Their indicated effects are all the same.

They are used to relieve nasal congestion, runny nose, sneezing, watery eyes, sore throat, and heaviness in the head caused by the common cold (acute rhinitis), allergic rhinitis, and sinusitis.

The names differ by only one character, so they may look like the same medicine, but the two products have different active ingredient compositions. Both are OTC medicines with the same indicated effects, but the antihistamine ingredient inside each one is different.

The amounts below are all based on 1 capsule (1 dose).

비엠쿨에스 contains a mequitazine-class antihistamine along with pseudoephedrine, while 비엠쿨에프 contains chlorphenamine along with methylephedrine and Magnoliae Flos dry extract.

Since the type of antihistamine differs, you can compare the ingredient lists side by side when making your choice. For reference, the approved standard pack size is 6 capsules for 비엠쿨에프캡슐 and 10 capsules for 비엠쿨에스캡슐.

These three products have fairly similar ingredient compositions. All three belong to the same category, containing mequitazine, belladonna, dipotassium glycyrrhizinate, pseudoephedrine, and caffeine. However, the amount of each ingredient differs slightly.

The amounts of mequitazine and caffeine are the same across all three products. What stands out is the pseudoephedrine content, which is involved in relieving nasal congestion.

The pseudoephedrine content differs as follows: 비엠쿨에스 60mg, 알레노즈 30mg, and 코메키나 25mg.

There are individual differences, but in general, the higher the pseudoephedrine content, the stronger its action tends to be; on the other hand, reactions such as palpitations and insomnia may also increase. This is also an ingredient that drivers should be cautious about taking.

All three products have the same approved indications and effects. The distinctions below do not represent superiority or inferiority in effect, but rather differences in dosing conditions and ingredient preferences. If you want a rough guide, please use the following as a reference.

All three products contain an antihistamine, so drowsiness may occur while taking them. It is therefore advisable to avoid driving or operating machinery. Do not drink alcohol while taking these medicines.

What about children? 비엠쿨에스, 알레노즈, and 코메키나 are all adult-formulation products; children under 15 years of age must not take them.

If you are looking for a rhinitis medicine for a child, it is appropriate to consult with a pharmacist to select a different medicine that has a pediatric dosage regimen, rather than using any of these products.

Additionally, since these medicines contain pseudoephedrine or methylephedrine, people with high blood pressure, heart disease, thyroid disease, glaucoma, or difficulty urinating, as well as those who are pregnant or breastfeeding, and elderly individuals, must check with a pharmacist or doctor before taking them. Because these ingredients may overlap with those in other cold medicines, rhinitis medicines, or allergy medicines, if you are taking any other medicines, please have a pharmacist at the pharmacy check for ingredient duplication.

Q. Can children take 비엠쿨에프? No. 비엠쿨에프 is dosed for adults only (no pediatric dosing), and the other three products are also prohibited for children under 15 years of age. For children, please consult a pharmacist separately to find a suitable option.

Q. Can I take 알레노즈 together with other cold medicines? It is not recommended. These medicines should not be taken together with other oral rhinitis medications, cold medicines or cough-and-expectorant products containing antihistamines, or motion-sickness medicines.

The ingredients may overlap and lead to an overdose, so please show both medicines to a pharmacist for confirmation before taking them.

Q. Can I take extra doses of 알레노즈? No. Do not exceed the prescribed dosage (1 dose, 1 capsule per dose, 3 times per 1 day). If your symptoms do not improve after 5–6 doses, stop taking the medicine and consult a pharmacist or doctor.

Q. Can I take it with coffee? 비엠쿨에스캡슐, 알레노즈캡슐, and 코메키나캡슐 each contain 50mg of caffeine. Adding coffee on top of this may cause palpitations or insomnia, so it is advisable to reduce your intake of caffeinated drinks.

Q. Can I drink alcohol while taking it? No. You should avoid drinking alcohol while taking these medicines, as they may cause increased drowsiness or dizziness.
