판피린타임 이부펜시럽: Comparing 3 Syrups with Other Korean Ibuprofen Cold Medicines

Hello.

This is the Dad Pharmacist from Suwon Star Pharmacy.

Dong-A Pharmaceutical has recently launched 3 new 판피린타임 이부펜 stick products.

The 판피린 name is familiar, but this product is a little different from the existing lineup.

It is a cold medicine that uses ibuprofen as its antipyretic, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory ingredient.

It has been released in 3 varieties depending on symptoms: Cold (comprehensive) / Nose (nasal) / Cough (throat).

That said, cold medicines containing ibuprofen are not entirely new.

Ibuprofen-containing cold medicine lineups have already been released under 한미약품 맥시부펜, 종근당 모드콜이부, and 동국제약 콜드프로펜.

So what makes 판피린타임, the newer entrant, different?

Today, we will directly compare the 3 판피린타임 varieties against existing ibuprofen cold medicines.

What is the most immediately noticeable difference?

The biggest difference is the dosage form.

While the existing products are all soft capsules, the 판피린타임 이부 series has been released as a 20mL stick-type liquid syrup.

The most significant difference is that it can be taken in liquid form when it is difficult to swallow medicine or when a sore throat makes swallowing capsules uncomfortable.

Another feature is that 1 dose is contained in a single stick, so there is no need to measure it separately.

However, it is not a product that simply changed the dosage form.

Let's compare the ingredients one by one to see how this new product has been formulated differently from the existing ones.

① How does the comprehensive cold medicine differ?

First, here is the Cold line — a comprehensive cold medicine used when symptoms include not only body aches and fever but also nasal cold symptoms and cough with phlegm.

Looking at the per-1-dose amount for adults, all 4 products share ibuprofen 150mg + pseudoephedrine 30mg + chlorpheniramine 2.5mg in common.

However, differences appear in the remaining ingredients.

판피린타임 이부콜드 contains dextromethorphan 16mg, guaifenesin 83mg, DL-methylephedrine 18mg, and additionally anhydrous caffeine 30mg.

By contrast, 맥시부펜콜드 has a composition quite similar to 판피린타임 except for the caffeine, while 모드콜이부콜드 and 콜드프로펜콜드 differ in that bromhexine is added to their formulations.

In other words, even within the same category of 'ibuprofen comprehensive cold medicine,' the composition and amounts of antitussive and expectorant ingredients differ slightly from product to product.

② How do the nasal cold medicines differ?

Second is the Nose line — nasal cold medicines focused on nasal symptoms such as runny nose, nasal congestion, and sneezing.

Here, the differences between products are much clearer.

Basically, all 4 products contain, per 1 adult dose, ibuprofen 150mg + pseudoephedrine 30mg + chlorpheniramine 2.5mg.

That is, the base specification for addressing nasal congestion, runny nose, and sneezing alongside pain and fever is the same.

The difference lies in what has been added.

판피린타임 이부노즈 contains DL-methylephedrine 18mg and anhydrous caffeine 30mg as additional ingredients, bringing the total to 5 active ingredients.

맥시부펜노즈 adds bromhexine to the basic 3 ingredients, making it a 4-ingredient formula,

while 모드콜이부노즈 and 콜드프로펜노즈 contain only the basic 3 ingredients, making them relatively straightforward formulas.

So even though they all carry the same 'Nose' name, the actual range of symptoms they address does differ.

③ How do the throat cold medicines differ?

Last is the COUGH line, which focuses on cough, phlegm, and sore throat.

This is actually the most interesting comparison.

맥시부펜코프, 모드콜이부코프, and 콜드프로펜코프 have virtually identical ingredients and amounts per single adult dose.

The base is ibuprofen 150mg, combined with dextromethorphan 16mg, guaifenesin 83.32mg, DL-methylephedrine 25mg, and bromhexine 4mg.

판피린타임 이부코프, on the other hand, is a little different.

Instead of bromhexine, it contains anhydrous caffeine 30mg, and DL-methylephedrine is 18mg while guaifenesin is 83mg.

So the comparison for the COUGH line actually becomes quite straightforward.

The 3 existing soft-capsule products have nearly identical ingredient lists, while 판피린타임 stands alone with a different ingredient composition and syrup formulation.

So what sets it apart from the other products?

Comparing all 3 product lines makes 판피린타임's distinguishing features fairly clear.

The first difference is the dosage form.

Unlike the existing products compared, which are soft capsules, 판피린타임 comes in a 20mL stick-type syrup format.

The second difference is caffeine.

All 3 variants of 판피린타임 contain anhydrous caffeine 30mg, whereas the other products compared this time do not contain caffeine.

The third difference is that this is not simply the existing soft-capsule formula converted directly into liquid form.

Looking in particular at the NOSE and COUGH lines, there are differences in the additional ingredients and dosage design compared to the existing products.

Overall, it seems most accurate to view this as a product that preserves the established 판피린 brand while adding a 'stick-type liquid syrup' option to the ibuprofen multi-symptom cold medicine market, which has seen a number of new entries recently.

That said, having more ingredients does not automatically mean a cold medicine is better.

Cold symptoms vary from person to person, and there is no reason to take ingredients you do not need.

  • If you have multiple cold symptoms including body aches and fever, consider COLD,

  • if runny nose and nasal congestion are your main symptoms, consider NOSE,

  • and if cough and phlegm are your main symptoms, consider COUGH.

Even among ibuprofen-based cold medicines, the most important thing is to check whether the product contains the ingredients that match your symptoms before making a choice.
