베아제 vs 닥터베아제: A Korean Pharmacist Explains How They Differ

Hello, I'm the Dad Pharmacist at Suwon Star Pharmacy.

Some customers come in saying, "I have indigestion — can I get 베아제?" But when they see 베아제정 and 닥터베아제정 sitting side by side on the shelf, they often ask, "What's the difference between the two?" The names are similar, so it's easy to get confused. Today I'll walk you through a proper comparison of the two, ingredient list in hand.

베아제정 vs 닥터베아제정 — At a Glance

Both products are over-the-counter digestive aids sold (supplied) by Daewoong Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. Both are approved in South Korea for the following indications: indigestion, loss of appetite, overeating, food stagnation, promotion of digestion, and abdominal bloating due to indigestion.

The core of both medicines is the same: digestive enzymes that break down fats, proteins, and carbohydrates. Both also share a bile component (ursodeoxycholic acid) and simethicone to help reduce gas.

The notable difference is that 닥터베아제정 contains a slightly wider variety of digestive enzymes, and its simethicone content is a more generous 70mg. If you feel particularly bloated and gassy, 닥터베아제 — with its higher simethicone content — may be worth considering. That said, a higher amount does not automatically mean it is stronger overall, so it is perfectly fine to keep using whichever one has worked well for you.

What Does the Difference in Ingredients Actually Mean?

Simply put, both fall under the same broad category of "enzyme-based digestive aids." Whether you're feeling heavy after a greasy meal or bloated from overeating, both products address the situation in a broadly similar way.

If you'd like to draw a distinction, here is a personal reference opinion:

  • General indigestion with a heavy, sluggish feeling → 베아제정

  • When gas and pronounced bloating are the main complaint → 닥터베아제정

The above distinction is a reference opinion based on differences in ingredients. For actual use, please follow the approved indications and the specified dosage instructions.

One important point to note: 베아제 is not an antacid. If heartburn or acid reflux is your main discomfort, you will need a different type of medicine. In that case, please describe your symptoms accurately to a pharmacist so you can be directed to the right product.

One dosage tip: digestive enzyme medicines are best taken after meals. The approved usage also specifies post-meal administration. Please do not exceed 3 times per 1 day as directed.

Can Pregnant Women and Children Take Them?

Let's start with children. Neither product should be taken by children aged 7 years or under. This is a contraindication stated identically in the package inserts of both medicines, so please observe it strictly.

What about pregnant women? Taking these medicines is not an outright contraindication. Taking them once or twice for a short period during a bad episode of indigestion during pregnancy is generally considered manageable. However, continuous long-term use is not recommended. If you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant, please consult a pharmacist or doctor before taking them.

As a note, 닥터베아제정 contains Yellow No. 4 (tartrazine). Anyone who is hypersensitive to this dye or has a history of allergy to it should use it with caution. 베아제정 contains lactose, so anyone with a hereditary lactose-related disorder should avoid it.

Questions You Might Have

Can I just take whichever one — 베아제 or 닥터베아제? Yes, broadly speaking they are similar, so it is fine to take whichever has worked well for you before. However, if gas and bloating are particularly bothersome, you might consider 닥터베아제정, which contains more simethicone.

I've seen 베아제 at a convenience store — is it the same thing? The convenience-store 베아제 is a small 3-tablet pack designed for quick use in urgent situations. It is packaged in a small quantity so you can take a dose or two when you suddenly feel unwell and the pharmacy is closed.

Can I take it together with other medicines? If you are already taking other medicines, you need to check whether any of the ingredients overlap. If you bring along any painkillers, liver medicines, or other medications you are taking, the pharmacist can check for overlapping ingredients.

What if I'm still bloated after 2–3 days of taking it? Digestive medicines are intended for symptom relief. If you do not improve after about 2 weeks of use, stop taking the medicine and consult a pharmacist or visit a healthcare facility. If you also develop a fever or other additional discomfort, it is best to seek advice sooner.

Both medicines are approved digestive aids in South Korea for food stagnation and indigestion, and when gas and bloating are pronounced, 닥터베아제정 may be a useful reference option to consider.
