  • 래피콜 파워 Renewal: What Changed in the 3 Korean Cold Medicines?

Hello, I'm the Dad Pharmacist at Suwon Star Pharmacy.

"I bought 래피콜 — what's different from before?" Some customers do ask this at the pharmacy.

It's not just the outer packaging that changed when 래피콜 soft capsules (3 varieties) were renewed as '래피콜 파워'.

The ingredient amounts, part of the ingredient composition, and the pack quantity have changed. This change does not mean that the product is more effective for everyone.

Let's go over what has changed based on the South Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) approval information.

    What Changed? Three Key Points

The renewal comes down to three key points.

First, increased fever-reducing and pain-relieving ingredient amounts. In all 3 varieties, acetaminophen increased from 200mg to 250mg per 1 capsule. Since the adult dose is 2 capsules per 1 dose, the amount taken at one time has gone up from 400mg to 500mg.

There is one important point to note here: acetaminophen was already an ingredient in the original 래피콜.

This renewal raised the amount — it was not a newly added ingredient.

Second, strengthened phlegm-relief components in 콜드 and 코프. Bromhexine hydrochloride 2mg has been added on top of the existing guaifenesin.

The two phlegm-relief ingredients together appear in 콜드 and 코프. Simply because an ingredient has been added does not mean the product is more effective for everyone.

Third, change in pack quantity. The count increased by 2 capsules, from 10 capsules to 12 capsules.

For adults, that is 2 capsules per 1 dose and 3 times per day — which works out to exactly two days' worth.

Comparing the Ingredients of the Three Cold Medicines: 콜드, 코프, and 노즈

Each of the three products targets slightly different symptoms.

All are over-the-counter cold medicines. The common adult dosage is 2 capsules per 1 dose, 3 times per 1 day, taken 30 minutes after meals.

All amounts below are per 1 capsule.

The South Korean-approved indication for all three products is 'relief of various cold symptoms.' However, because the ingredient compositions differ, 래피콜 파워 노즈 tends to be considered for runny nose, nasal congestion, and sneezing as the main symptoms, while 래피콜 파워 콜드 or 래피콜 파워 코프 tends to be considered when cough and phlegm are more prominent.

The key is choosing based on your symptoms — the fact that these products have been renewed does not automatically make them better for every symptom.

Please check the following before taking

The approved dosage for the three products is: those 15 years old and over and adults take 2 capsules per 1 dose, and those over 7 years old up to under 15 years old take 1 capsule per 1 dose, each taken 3 times per 1 day, 30 minutes after meals. A dose for those 7 years old and under is not specified in the product's dosage instructions, so do not administer at your own discretion — please consult a doctor. The approved precautions state that the product must not be given to children under 2 years old, and if use is truly necessary, the child should be seen by a doctor.

The most important thing to watch out for is acetaminophen overlap. This has become even more important now that the content has increased to 250mg per capsule.

    ● Do not take overlapping doses of acetaminophen: Do not take this product together with other medicines that contain acetaminophen. Do not combine cold medicines, fever-reducing pain relievers, or other products with overlapping ingredients at your own discretion. The approved-information warning of a daily maximum of 4,000mg does not mean that you may exceed the set dosage of this product.

    ● Avoid alcohol — Drinking while taking this medicine puts extra strain on the liver. If you regularly drink alcohol, please consult a pharmacist before taking it.

    ● Drowsiness / Driving caution: Avoid driving a car or operating machinery while taking this medicine. If a hypersensitivity reaction such as a skin rash appears after taking it, stop immediately and seek medical attention. Severe allergic symptoms such as difficulty breathing or facial swelling require prompt medical treatment.

Do not take this medicine if you have a hypersensitivity to any of its ingredients, if cold medicines or fever-reducing pain relievers have ever triggered asthma in you, or if you are currently taking an MAO inhibitor or are within 2 weeks of stopping one. 콜드 and 노즈 are also contraindicated in patients with severe or uncontrolled high blood pressure, or severe acute or chronic kidney disease or kidney failure. If you have any other medical conditions or are taking other medicines, please consult first. If you are pregnant or may be pregnant, do not take this medicine at your own discretion — please consult a doctor. In particular, 콜드 and 코프 carry a Pregnancy Contraindication Grade 2 labeling related to guaifenesin. Those who are breastfeeding should also consult a doctor or pharmacist before taking it. This article is a summary of the main differences; please check the product-specific approved information below for the full list of contraindications and precautions.

Frequently asked questions at the pharmacy

    Q. Can I take these medicines together? No. 콜드, 코프, and 노즈 all contain acetaminophen as a common ingredient. Taking two or three of them together can result in overlapping ingredients and an excessive dose. Please choose just one that matches your symptoms.

    Q. Which products contain dextromethorphan? 파워 콜드 and 파워 코프 each contain dextromethorphan hydrobromide hydrate at 8mg per 1 capsule. Since this is an ingredient used to suppress coughing, these two products are the ones to consider when you have a cough.

It is not contained in 노즈.

    Q. Have the ingredients changed completely compared to the original 래피콜? No. The basic formula is the same; the acetaminophen content has increased from 200mg to 250mg, and bromhexine has been added to 콜드 and 코프. The packaging has also changed from 10 capsules to 12 capsules.

    Q. What if I don't get better after taking it 5–6 times? If your symptoms do not improve, stop taking the medicine and see a doctor. A cough lasting 1 week or more, or one accompanied by a high fever, may not be a simple cold.

Even within the 래피콜 파워 range, the ingredient compositions differ. Along with your symptoms — such as a nasal cold or cough and phlegm — please consider your age, medical conditions, and current medications, and choose one product in consultation with a pharmacist.

Given that the dosage has increased, please take an extra moment to check that the ingredients do not overlap with any other cold medicines or fever reducers you may be taking.

When you visit the pharmacy, if you let us know what other medicines you are currently taking, your age, and your physical condition, a pharmacist can check together with you whether there are any overlapping ingredients. Feel free to consult us when you would also like to review your supplements or health functional foods at the same time.
