포지듀얼크림 vs Acyclovir-Only Cream: Understanding Cold Sore Treatments in Korea

Cold sores — quite a few of you have probably experienced them at least once. You know, that tingling sensation around the lips that eventually turns into a blister.

I actually get them myself from time to time, so I've always had a keen interest in cold sore medications.

Dong-A Pharmaceutical recently released a new product related to herpes, and I tried it out straight away. It's clearly different from acyclovir single-ingredient products in several ways, so I'd like to go over those differences today.

포지듀얼크림 is a treatment cream for recurrent cold sores recently launched by Dong-A Pharmaceutical.

It is an over-the-counter (OTC) medicine available exclusively at pharmacies.

It contains two active ingredients.

① Acyclovir 50mg/g

This is an antiviral ingredient that inhibits herpes virus DNA replication. It is the core ingredient in cold sore ointments.

② Hydrocortisone 10mg/g

This is a topical steroid belonging to the very weak class — the mildest grade among topical steroids. It quickly brings inflammation, swelling, and itching caused by the virus under control.

Think of it as a combination product in which the two ingredients each play a distinct role.

To put it simply:

An acyclovir single-ingredient product only targets the virus. Inflammation, swelling, and itching are left to resolve on their own.

포지듀얼크림 targets the virus while also addressing inflammation, swelling, and itching at the same time.

When a cold sore flares up, not only the virus but also the inflammation in the surrounding tissue becomes more severe. That difference shows up in the speed of recovery.

포지듀얼크림 has some thoughtful design details built in with the user in mind.

This is actually the part I like most about this product.

Specifically, it has a lip-balm-style applicator tip.

Herpes is contagious, so touching the affected area with your hands is unhygienic and can spread the virus to your eyes or nose. Normally you would need to use a cotton swab or wash your hands thoroughly after applying. With 포지듀얼크림, you can apply it by pressing the applicator tip directly onto the affected area, so there's no need to worry about that.

Also, most acyclovir ointments and other combination products tend to come in relatively small amounts — around 5g. 포지듀얼크림 comes in a large 10g size, which is a considerable advantage. Cold sores are a condition that tends to recur quickly when you're tired. Buying one tube gives you a generous supply to keep using whenever needed, making it a great medicine to have on hand at home.

When I explain this at the pharmacy, everyone says, "Oh, then this one sounds better."

Many people feel hesitant about using a product containing a steroid on the face, but hydrocortisone is the mildest grade, so there is very little concern with short-term, localized use.

The texture was not thin or runny and felt like it adhered well to the lips. Thanks to the lip-balm-style applicator, I could pull it out and apply it immediately even when out and about, which was very convenient.

When I started using it as soon as that tingling feeling came on, it didn't progress into a blister. It really does seem like catching a cold sore early is everything. ^^

Precautions are as follows.

✅ Cannot be used in children under 18 years of age

✅ Please avoid use if you are breastfeeding

✅ If you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant, please consult a doctor or pharmacist first

✅ Do not use on the eyes, nose, inside of the mouth, or genitals

✅ Apply 5 times per day for 5 days / It is important to start using it as soon as symptoms begin
