Hello, I'm the Dad Pharmacist at Suwon Star Pharmacy.
"Do you have anything like an American antacid or digestive medicine?" Some customers who have traveled abroad ask us exactly that. Many people remember the pink stomach remedy, 펩토비스몰 (Pepto-Bismol), which is commonly seen in supermarkets when visiting the United States.
Recently, a product containing the same class of active ingredient has become available in South Korea: 펩토무스현탁액. Let's take a look together at what this medicine is, how to take it, and what to watch out for.
|
What is 펩토무스현탁액? |
펩토무스현탁액 is an over-the-counter medicine containing the active ingredient bismuth subsalicylate. It is not a combination product mixing multiple ingredients — it is a single-ingredient formulation containing just this one substance.
The approved indications from South Korea's Ministry of Food and Drug Safety can be broadly divided into two categories.
First, relief of abdominal pain caused by diarrhea and traveler's diarrhea.
Second, relief of indigestion, heartburn, nausea, belching, and bloating caused by overeating or excessive alcohol consumption.
In short, it is a medicine used for sudden diarrhea and abdominal pain while traveling, as well as the bloated, heartburn-like discomfort that follows overeating or drinking too much.
Unlike conventional adsorbent antidiarrheal agents, this product is known for its combined actions including protection of the gastrointestinal mucosa and antisecretory and anti-inflammatory effects, making it an option worth considering when diarrhea is accompanied by abdominal pain.

Color and Taste Like Strawberry Milk |
To be honest, liquid antidiarrheal and heartburn medicines up to now have not generally tasted very good. Some people find them hard to swallow. Personally, I feel this one is different.
The newly released 펩토무스 현탁액 is a bit different.
The color is a pretty light pink, and the taste is on the sweet side — rather like strawberry milk. Compared to conventional gastrointestinal medicines, I found it easier to drink.
|
How Do You Take It? |
Please shake the bottle well before use. Because it is a suspension, the settled ingredients need to be mixed evenly.
-
For adults and children aged 12 and over
-
1 dose of 30mL per serving
-
If needed, can be taken again at 30-minute intervals
-
Do not exceed a maximum of 240mL per 1 day
For diarrhea and traveler's diarrhea, take 30mL every 30 minutes, or adjust to 60mL per hour. However, do not use for more than 2 days for diarrhea symptoms.
For heartburn and bloating caused by overeating or excessive alcohol, take 30mL every 30 minutes as the standard dose.
Do not give this medicine to children under 12 years of age on your own — please consult a healthcare professional first. This medicine is approved for use in those aged 12 and over, so it is safer to find another approach for young children.

Things to Check Before Taking It |
This medicine belongs to the same salicylate class as aspirin. For that reason, there are several things you must check before taking it.
● Whether you are taking salicylates or aspirin: If you are already taking aspirin or another salicylate preparation, do not use this medicine at the same time. The same applies to anyone with a hypersensitivity to aspirin.
● Children and adolescents with chickenpox or influenza: Children and adolescents who have chickenpox or influenza, or who are recovering from either, should not use this medicine. Although rare, it may be associated with a serious condition called Reye's syndrome, so it must be avoided during this period and you should consult a doctor.
● Tongue or stools may turn black: After taking this medicine, the tongue or stools may turn black. This is a temporary phenomenon caused by bismuth and is not harmful. Knowing this in advance should keep you from being alarmed.
However, if you already had black stools or blood in your stools before taking this medicine, it may be difficult to distinguish from bleeding, so be sure to check with a pharmacist or doctor.
Additionally, those with gastric or duodenal ulcers or bleeding disorders should not use this product. If you are taking anticoagulants, diabetes medication, gout medication, or arthritis medication, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, please consult a pharmacist or doctor before use.
Avoid drinking alcohol while taking this product, and if symptoms persist or worsen for 2 days or more, stop use and see a doctor.

Frequently asked questions from our customers |
Q. What is 펩토무스현탁액 used for? It is used to relieve indigestion, heartburn, nausea, belching, and bloating after overeating or excessive drinking, as well as abdominal pain associated with diarrhea or traveler's diarrhea. It is especially convenient to have on hand when diarrhea is accompanied by abdominal pain while traveling.
Q. How much can I take per day? 1 dose of 30mL, which can be repeated every 30 minutes if needed, up to a maximum of 240mL per day. Do not exceed that amount.
Q. Is this the same as the pink stomach medicine sold in the United States? It contains the same class of ingredient (bismuth subsalicylate). However, versions sold overseas may differ in ingredient labeling or concentration, so please check the packaging or ask a pharmacist.
Q. Can children take it? This medicine is approved (in South Korea) for use by those aged 12 and older. Do not give it to children under 12 without consulting a doctor first.
When diarrhea is accompanied by abdominal pain, or when heartburn and nausea come together after excessive drinking or overeating, this may be an option for adults to consider. However, diarrhea accompanied by fever or blood in the stool, or diarrhea lasting more than 2 days, should not be managed with medication alone — please see a doctor first.
